In the Family Support program HAMA works closely with the social welfare of about 16 different families in and around Tanga. These are families who are living in very difficult conditions and are often unable to meet their most basic needs. The goal of the program is to reduce poverty, improve living conditions, empower women and make the children meet they educational goals. The families get counseling, access to information and training on these issues. In connection with this program there is a “Shamba-project” where women from the supported families work together to clean, prepare and cultivate a field where they grow vegetables. The families are also supported in starting small businesses in order to become self-sustainable in the longer run. Most of these also include many children, sometimes up to 7 living with one mother.
